There, beyond the misty branches, The Girl spied a figure in beautiful motion. A dancing faerie, moving to the music of the magical world. The Girl was entranced. The Dancer spied her audience and smiled as she offered a hand with pure, good magic. “You’re not lost yet! I can guide you.” She ran down the path, laughing as she turned back with a hand held out. “Come with me and I’ll show you the route! Just watch for the mists; they can be deceptive.”
It is never NOT a pleasure to work with the amazingly talented Kristin Marshall! We met originally when I was shooting illustrations for a children’s book (get it here!) and needed a ballerina. Kristin and I became fast friends, and I always want an excuse to take photos of her! (You’ll see her again later. She has agreed to be a character from a future District book.) When I realized I wanted a dancing faerie for The Door, well, who else would I go to?
And never let it be said that desperate times don’t call for desperate measures. This shoot was done on a Thursday on my lunch break, and could only be done then as I had a deadline to complete this image for a midterm. Yoiks! I zipped from West Sacramento to the McKinley Park Rose Garden (which had perfect lighting), we shot for half an hour, and then I zipped back to work. It was worth the effort! I think Kristin turns off gravity when she dances.
Next time you’ll find get to meet the first of the not-so-good characters of the Magic World and see just why so many have warned The Girl about bad magic . . .
