Beyond the autumn forest lay a beautiful rocky river that endlessly rolled on to a sea. The Girl spied a figure on the shore and hesitated to approach. The Selkie sensed her in turn and looked up with a smile. “It’s okay. I mean no harm.” She offered moss that shimmered like her ocean-magic eyes. “Eat this.” When The Girl had, The Selkie stood and held out a glowing hand. “Come with me! Now you can join me underwater! Can you swim?”
“No,” The Girl admitted.
“You will soon!” The Selkie laughed in return.
This shoot was one of those that happened almost spur of the moment. I and Luna had already been at the American River to photograph A Selkie’s Romance*, and since a Selkie fit perfectly into The Door, we went ahead and did those images as well!
Talk about racing the clock and the weather. The sun was setting extremely fast, and so I was shooting rapid-fire before we lost light. Also, this ended up being the last day warm enough to get wet in the river, so we lucked out on that as well!
It’s always a delight to work with Luna. She’s not only my brilliant makeup artist, but she’s an amazing actress and costumer within her own right. Perhaps the humor here is that her costume ended up being a swatch of fur from the fabric store that came from the remnant bin and just HAPPENED to be the right size.
And, no, I did not have a nearly naked model at the river. I just happen to be good enough with a camera, and her with costumes, that you can’t really tell if we did or not.
*A Selkie’s Romance is a short photo-story I posted on my Facebook page. This link will take you to the first image and you can scroll through. Luna and I decided to approach the tale of the selkie from a slightly different angle, trying to give her a bit more agency in her life as well as remove some of the . . . issues of the original story where consent was kind of not a thing. In a way, it gave me a better story.
