The river was neither cold nor unwelcoming. It was very nice to be there, and The Girl loved how breathing the water was like smelling the sea. A sudden chill touched her at last as she sensed a familiar danger. There. A figure below her. The Mermaid looked at her with cruel eyes. “What brings you to my domain?” The Girl could say nothing, now afraid, for she could not run away. The Mermaid did not get close enough to hurt her, though, for a familiar sigil appeared to repel her. A hand grabbed The Girl’s, and she was urged away from the scene.
This shoot started by me finding my model by asking my friends, “Who wants to be a bad mermaid and has access to a hot tub?” The hot tub was mandatory. It is winter in Sacramento, and at the time we were scheduling this, temperature hovered in the 40s. Fun!
My friend Katie stepped up to be my Mermaid, and her apartment had a hot tub! I shuffled over with the fin/tail and several choices for tops. Yep, she’s wearing a top though she looks topless. The magic of costuming!
Now, to give you a scope of our interesting logistics, the hot tub was probably six feet in diameter. Katie didn’t have much room for maneuvering, and having never worn a monofin before, it was an oddity for her. We also discovered belatedly that she couldn’t open her eyes underwater, so she couldn’t be underwater looking up. The close-up was a cheat. I’m not saying how. I have to keep SOME secrets. 😉 After she swam back and forth across the hot tub enough, we hauled her out and bundled her up in warm towels and robe and off we went.
I’m still not sure what the maintenance guy was thinking as he saw her in full mermaid regalia in the hot tub while this chick in sweats with a large camera and tripod took photos. I hope we gave him a great story for his friends.
Next week we see who saved The Girl from her encounter, and see a familiar face return to my blog . . .
